The large sand dunes in the background is named the Matterhorn. It was the largest sand dune on Okaloosa Island - at one time it stood 100 ft tall. It holds so many precious childhood memories for me and many others that grew up along the Emerald Coast during the 1960s and 70s. Back then the “locals” would remove the skeg from their water skis (remember this is Florida!), wax the bottom, and ski down this massive - by our standards - sand dune. Over time, it became such a popular pastime, and even a competitive sport; it put a lot of wear & tear on the ol’ sand dune and then it got flattened by Hurricanes Erin and Opal in 1995. So for the sake of preservation, the “authorities” eventually had to put a stop to all of the fun! Over time the Matterhorn, and surrounding dunes, have been slowly, and naturally, rebuilding to their former glory - not quite there yet. To most people, I’m sure it looks just like any other sand dune; but for me, it’ll always hold a special place in my heart... I’m so glad she’s still standing.
