Fort Pickens was designed and constructed to defend Pensacola Bay and the Pensacola Navy Yard and Depot from foreign attack. The fort stood with its sister forts throughout the country safeguarding the democratic institutions of the young republic, and today it is an enduring symbol of the United States.
Constructed between 1829-1834 and it supplemented Fort Barrancas, Fort McRee, & the Navy Yard. Located at the western tip of Santa Rosa Island (Pensacola Beach), just offshore from the mainland where it guarded the island & the entrance to the harbor.
One June 20, 1899, a fire in Bastion D reached the bastion’s magazine, which contained 4 tons of gun powder. The explosion obliterated Bastion D with a force so great that bricks from the walls landed across the bay at Fort Barrancas, over 1.5 miles away.
