Description: Approximately 35 miles south of Tallahassee lies St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge which comprises over 70,000 acres of wildlife habitat along 45 miles of Florida’s Gulf coastline. Established in 1931 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds, it is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge system. The refuge includes coastal marshes, islands, estuaries of seven north Florida rivers, and is home to a diverse community of plant and animal life.

Artist Note: One of my all-time favorite photos “Panacea” was taken at this exact location in 2019 of a foggy morning sunrise. With the sun burning through to give it beautiful golden hues and a peaceful atmosphere, it occurred to me that under the right conditions it would also be a perfect location for a Milky Way photo with the trees and reflection pond in the foreground against the darkest night skies in Florida - I’ve been visualizing it ever since! My first attempt was during March’s (2023) new moon, but the stars didn’t want to reveal themselves as they hid behind a foggy veil for two nights in a row – which I would’ve normally welcomed! The following month I went back for my second attempt, and the dark sky did not disappoint! The photo turned out exactly how I envisioned it, which is rare because you just can’t always plan on Mother Nature’s help! This “Cosmic Oasis” will definitely be one of my all-time favorite photos, just like “Panacea.”
