Description: The Florida District of the Gulf Islands National Seashore is located along Florida’s Emerald Coast featuring 20 miles of pristine coastal beaches and sand dunes on an offshore barrier island. The emerald green water contrasts beautifully with the white quartz sand that is so fine and pure it squeaks under your feet. This photo was taken on the west end of the seven-mile stretch between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach. During the months of March to October, the Milky way rises from the south-east over the Gulf of Mexico, providing a beautiful nighttime viewing experience.

Artist Note: Taken at 5:50 am, just as twilight was becoming visible to the naked eye, the Milky Way rises over the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. With a crystal-clear sky and clear calm water, my eyes were beginning to see the beautiful color contrast between the deep blue sky and emerald green water. My challenge was to bring them all together in harmony and balance with the camera. This required a delicate blending of exposures between sky and foreground. To help highlight the water and the beautiful ripples in the foreground, I had to recruit another light source. During the long exposure, I took off my headlight and put it on the dimmest setting, then gently swept the beams of light over the water for a few seconds from a low angle. This not only pulled that emerald green water out of the darkness, but also exposed the beautiful ripples. The photo came together perfectly in such a way that the contours of the water and sand perfectly balanced the Milky Way in the sky, creating a rotational effect that pulls the viewer into the image.
