Descripton:
Located at the headwaters of the Perdido River in Baldwin County, Splinter Hill Bog encompasses 627 acres and is home to a variety of habitats, from sandy upland longleaf pine forests to seepage bogs to inundated small stream swamp forests. Much of the site is covered by some of the largest and most visually impressive white-topped (Sarracenia leucophylla) pitcher plant bogs in the world. The Splinter Hill Bog Preserve and the adjacent state-owned Forever Wild Preserve contain some of the most intact seepage bog communities remaining on the Gulf Coast. Numerous rare and declining species associated with seepage bogs, upland longleaf forest, and coastal blackwater streams are known to occur within this site.

Artist Notes:
Splinter Hill Bog is the best managed, and pristine, pitcher plant bog that I’ve ever seen. I felt compelled to visit it one last time this year before the plants wither in the upcoming summer heat… And, I’m so glad I did! My intent was to capture this on a foggy morning, but the fog was slight; however, with the sun rising over the bog the dappled golden light shined through the trees. It illuminated the pitchers just right to transform the bog into a magical scene that looked like it came out of a fairy tale book. While photographing this enchanting scene an old quote, by John Muir, kept running through my head… “And into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul.”

Made from 100% alpha cellulose, this paper features a heavy basis weight of 350 gsm and a thickness of 14.6 mil that provide a feel of quality. It is also bright with a rated whiteness of 104% through a moderate use of OBA content and has an opacity of 100%. Furthermore, the paper is acid free and calcium carbonate buffered for longevity and water resistant.
