Description:
Approximately 35 miles south of Tallahassee lies St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge which comprises over 70,000 acres of wildlife habitat along 45 miles of Florida’s Gulf coastline. Established in 1931 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds. It is one of the oldest refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The refuge includes coastal marshes, islands, estuaries of seven north Florida rivers, and is home to a diverse community of plant and animal life.

Artist Note:
After scouting St. Marks the previous summer, I had another opportunity to visit this area with a group of fellow photographers in February, 2019. I had already fallen in love with the “old” Florida feel of St. Marks and wanted a photograph that captured the essence of this place, which included the islands of trees standing tall in the vast seas of coastal marshes. Of course, it needed to be captured under a beautiful atmospheric light of a misty sunrise/sunset.  After scouting around for a few days looking for the perfect composition, it all came together on my last day there at the Panacea Unit of St. Marks to give me this beautiful scene of the sun burning though the fog casting a golden glow on the whole landscape… now I know why they call this place “Panacea.”
