Description: The Florida District of the Gulf Islands National Seashore is located along Florida’s Emerald Coast featuring 20 miles of pristine coastal beaches and sand dunes on an offshore barrier island. The island is comprised of white quartz sand that is so fine and pure it squeaks under your feet. This photo was taken about a mile west of Opal Beach, which is located on the seven mile stretch between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach. This was photo was taken during the 1st full moon in August, known as the Sturgeon Moon as named by the Native Americans because of the abundance of fish in the Great Lakes during this time. The Sturgeon moon represents strength, generosity, and knowledge.

Artist Note: Where moonlight meets sunrise or sunset, there exists a brief enchanting moment lasting but mere minutes. It's a time when the heavens bestow upon the world a soft, pastel glow that seems to defy all earthly laws. In this delicate balance of opposing light, shadows disappear, and the landscape becomes bathed in the most tender light and hues. It is difficult to photograph because in this non-directional light it appears as if there is no depth in the shadowless landscape. I am solely reliant on composition to add depth, texture, and interest. On this particular morning, of the Sturgeon Moon, it was especially quiet for not a whisper of a breeze stirred the sea oats that typically danced in harmony with the gentle wind. It was as if the world stood still, except for the rhythmic whispers of the distant waves. The sea oats, usually swaying gracefully, stood motionless as if posing for the photograph I was about to take. As the moon set over the Gulf and the sun began to ascend, the breeze returned, and the world resumed it’s dance… but, I will always remember the morning when I listened to the "Whispers of the Sturgeon Moon."
