To capture this photo on the Navarre Beach Reef, I had to swim through a gauntlet of Sea Nettles. Sea nettles are a type of jellyfish, and Sea turtles LOVE to eat jellyfish! I watched this one eat at least four, and they have a very painful sting! Fortunately, sea turtles are immune to a jellyfish’s sting. While I was trying to avoid those painful tentacles he would just swim right up to them and begin chomping down! Turtles will close their eyes to protect their sensitive corneas when taking a bite. I noticed some of those tentacles would stick to the side of the turtle’s head, so he would use his front flippers to wipe them off. I couldn’t help but wonder if he felt a little discomfort while eating this spicy snack... kind of like eating a spicy meatball!!!
